Abstinence

Abstinence is a voluntary restraint from indulging a desire or appetite for certain bodily activities that are widely experienced as giving pleasure. Abstinence is 100% effective in preventing pregnancy. Abstinence protects people against STDs. Some STDs spread through oral-genital sex, anal sex, or even intimate skin-to-skin contact without actual penetration. Many religious and ethical systems proscribe sexual activities between a person and anyone other than a spouse of that person, including most …

Why I Think True Love Waits

True love is loving someone with everything you have got. Not being afraid of showing that person that you love them and not holding back in any way.  True love is also giving someone space to grow room to be free to do something without being afraid of being judged. True love is very rare. Many people search for true love and the sad part is that few of them will ever find it. Some will find it and loose it along the way, while others will continue to search for it in the hope that before …

Why Volunteer?

Your Motivations Think about how much you receive when you give and consider why you want to volunteer. You may have several different reasons. Here are just a few of the many possible motivations identified by other volunteers: to feel needed to share a skill to get to know a community to demonstrate commitment to a cause/belief to gain leadership skills to act out a fantasy to do your civic duty because of pressure from a friend or relative satisfaction from accomplishment to keep busy for recognition …

19 Million New STD Infections Every Year

"It is clear that public programs alone won't be able to dramatically reduce STD rates. Everyone must be involved in the solution," said Douglas. "We need to collaborate with the private sector to expand public awareness, increase the role of private health care providers in STD screening and treatment, and encourage open discussions about sexual health within our families and communities to reduce the stigma of STDs." CDC estimates that there are 19 million new STD infections …

Lost Art of the Thank You Note: Give Honest, Sincere Appreciation

Lost Art of the Thank You Note: Give Honest, Sincere Appreciation Writing a sincere thank you note is one of the professional skills that can make a lasting favorable impression. People like being appreciated. One of Dale Carnegie's fundamental human relation principles is "Give honest, sincere appreciation." When writing a thank you note, use a plain, small card. However, the card is not as important as the effort, so if paper is all that is available, write the note anyway! Use this 6-step …

God loves you!

God loves you not because of what you do, but because of who He is. God is love (1 John 4:8). God doesn't have to pretend to love you; He can't not love you, because He is love. In fact, the very actions of God exemplify what love is. The apostle John explains that this is how we know what love is: Jesus Christ laid down his life for us (1 John 3:16). Only a few verses later, he further defines love: This is love: not that we loved God, but that he loved us and sent his Son as an atoning sacrifice for …

Accepting limits

Accepting limits It's absurd to look at a three year old toddler and say, "this kid can't read or do math or even string together a coherent paragraph. He's a dolt and he's never going to amount to anything." No, we don't say that because we know we can teach and motivate and cajole the typical kid to be able to do all of these things. Why is it okay, then, to look at a teenager and say, "this kid will never be a leader, never run a significant organization, never save a life, never …

Teen Pregnancy Prevention Funding Announcement

 Teen Pregnancy Prevention Funding Announcement

Washington, DC - Office of Adolescent Health released a funding announcement for the $75 million in competitive grants to be awarded to "evidenced based" programs under the new Teen Pregnancy Prevention Program.

The announcement makes clear that all grantees must select from a specific list of curricula in order to qualify for this funding.

Not a single abstinence-centered curriculum is included in the list, verifying NAEA's concern over the lack of priority given to risk avoidance in the new funding stream.
